Trying to design your perfect garage? Then you need to think about the kind of garage door you want. At its simplest, a garage door must be able to open, close and lock. This doesn’t only involve thinking about the different sizes, but also the materials and colours. Different types of garages doors work very differently. Would you like to learn more? Discover the different garage doors

There are four types of garage door: up and over garage doors, rolling doors, double garage doors and electric garage doors with remote control. Each type of garage door has different advantages and disadvantages.

Up and over garage door

Up and over doors are usually only found on garages, and provide a beneficial and long-term solution. As the name suggests, this type of garage door opens by sliding overhead and under the garage ceiling. Tension springs keep the door open and prevent it from closing uncontrollably.

Up and over garage doors are relatively simple to open. Some of them are fitted with an electric drive so you can open them with an electric remote control. The advantage for you is that you don’t have to get out of your car to open the garage door. An up and over garage door can also be clad with impregnated wood from northern Europe. This gives your wooden garage a more attractive appearance and protects it against various weather conditions. One disadvantage of an up and over garage door is that you can’t use the ceiling of the garage for much storage. Once opened, an up and over garage door takes up a lot of space.

Roller garage door

Another option for garage doors is a roller door. Roller doors take up the least space of all types of garage door. These are ideal if you want to keep as much open space as possible in your garage. With roller doors, the door rolls vertically without occupying space on the garage ceiling. This way you can still use your entire ceiling for storage.

Roller doors can be opened using a remote control. They’re also relatively easy to secure. This way your stored items are protected against burglary. Roller doors are also well insulated, ensuring the garage doesn’t get too cold. One disadvantage of a rolling door as a garage door is that they must be opened almost completely before anything or anyone can go in. This is especially annoying if you want to enter the garage several times a day.

Sectional garage door

A sectional door consists of horizontal panels. One advantage of sectional doors is that they always fit into your garage. The shape of the door opening isn’t a problem here. In addition, the panels slide close to the garage ceiling as they open. This means you have more space to store goods or your car. Nor do the panels swing out as you open the door. This means you’re using the space in your garage optimally.

In some cases, you also have the option of a side sectional door. Here, the panels slide along the side walls of the garage. One disadvantage of this door is that it is impossible to use the wall along which the panels slide.

Double garage door

Double garage doors have several advantages. Firstly, they can be opened from two sides. So with this type of garage door you only need to open one door if you want to enter or leave the garage by bike, for example. And there’s no threshold to pass over.

One disadvantage of double garage doors is that they almost always have to be opened manually. Most double garage doors have a simple door handle with a lock. This makes double garage doors less suitable for the everyday storage of your car.
