Make your own advent candles
In the darkest months of the year it is always cosy and atmospheric to light candles. To get in the Christmas mood, we have a simple DIY idea for you: making advent candles. This year the Advent will start on Sunday 2 December 2018 and end on Sunday 23 December 2018.
What you need:
- Remnants of old candles
- A pan
- Small bowl or dish to melt the old wax
- Milk pack or tube (example from Pringles)
- A ladle
- wick (lace thread) Tip: test in advance whether it will burn nicely
- Baking paper
- Scissor
- Tape
- Pin
How to make it:
- Use the pin to pierce a hole in the bottom of the milk carton or tube.
- Thread the wick through the hole. (To prevent waste, the wick must be thicker than the hole.)
- Then connect the end of the wick to a skewer and place it across the opening so that the wick is not pulled out.
- Pull the bottom of the wick a bit and fix it with an adhesive tape.
- Melt pieces of candle in a bain-marie and keep stirring with a ladle. Make sure that the water does not boil, otherwise the wax will burn!
- Pour the candle wax into your mold.
- Let it dry until it is hard. (Possibly in the refrigerator to speed up the cooling).
- Remove the candle from the template. (Tear the carton and pull it off).
- To finish off your candle you can stick decorative material on the side such as figures or Christmas decorations.
Make your own Advent calendar
Advent calendars come in different shapes and sizes. With an Advent calendar you count down the days until Christmas and every day you open a hatch or box where something nice is behind. We show you how to make an Advent calendar with a hanger.
What you need:
- A clothes hanger
- Rope and ribbons
- Wrapping paper
- Labels
- Adhesive tape
- Scissor
- Pens and markers
- Decoration material
How to make it:
- Wrap the presents.
- Hang the wrapped gifts with rope and ribbons on a clothes hanger.
- It works best if you hang the hanger before you hang the presents. (This ensures that the hanger does not hang crooked).
- Provide the gifts with beautiful labels and write a wish on them, for example.
- Always give the presents and labels a different number. (From 1 to 24.)
- Adjust the technique such as writing numbers, stamping or pasting. Everything is possible!
A home-made Advent wreath
Tying an Advent wreath yourself is not that difficult and also gives you the opportunity to let your creativity run wild. Below we have a guide for you how to tie an Advent wreath yourself.
What you need:
- a straw wreath
- 1-2 bunch fir sprig
- Green craft wire
- 4 big candles
- 4 candle holders
- Decoration
How to make it:
- Cut small twigs off the fir sprig and put five together.
- Lay these on the wreath and wrap the ends with the craft wire a few times so that it rests firmly on the wreath.
- Then place the next bundle of branches slightly displaced on the wreath and repeat the process.
- Do it again and again until the whole wreath is covered with fir sprig.
- Afterwards put the candles on the candle holders and place them on the wreath.
- Then it’s time to decorate. Here you can decide according to your taste and attach the decoration with the green craft wire on the wreath.
- And then your home-made Advent wreath is finished! Enjoy the contemplative Advent season!
